Just because you’re teaching English doesn’t mean you don’t have rights too. After consulting message boards, experienced teachers and even recruiters, TCN has established a “Bill of Rights” of sorts for teachers. It addresses standards that any teacher, new or experienced, should consider before signing their contract. All jobs posted on TCN meet these minimum standards and we do not place teachers in schools unless schools agree to the below standards.
Bill of Rights
Salary:
- Minimum standards follow that of SAFEA, the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. For more information about SAFEA, visit the China Teaching FAQ posts about SAFEA and SAFEA Salary Requirements.
- Salaries will be paid on the date stated in the contract with appropriate taxes taken out.
Visa
- Appropriate visa and residence permit is provided by the school.
Living arrangements
- Adequate living accommodations provided for by the school or an appropriate housing allowance given in addition to salary.
Working hours
- Working hours in the contract will be clearly stated and no overtime will be asked of or expected from the teacher.
- Additional hours put in by the teacher (not mentioned in the contract) will be at the teacher’s discretion. Working hours will during normal school hours (no nights/weekends).
- Teaching hours will be clearly stated in the contract with the maximum number of teaching hours per week (no more than 20).
- Office hours and duties during office hours will be clearly stated in the contract. Office hours will not exceed a work week of 40 hours (ie if you teach 20 hours/week, there will be a maximum of 20 office hours).
- Two days off every week.
Bonuses
- Bonuses clearly defined in contract.
- Upon completion of the contract, teachers will be given dollar amount for stipend for travel expenses back to their home country.
Holidays
- National Holidays and Christmas Day are paid holidays.
Academic Support
- Appropriate teaching materials (bookies, general supplies, etc.) will be provided.
- Class sizes will not exceed 40 students.
- Teaching assistant (Native Chinese speaker) provided.
